Academics
Elementary
At Amber Elementary, our curriculum is designed to foster academic excellence and social-emotional growth. Every Kindergarten through 2nd grade class is supported by two dedicated teachers, ensuring a small teacher-to student ratio for personalized learning. Each day begins with a Morning Meeting, where student build essential social-emotional skills while reinforcing foundational concepts like counting shapes and time. This time also helps set expectations and establish routines, creating a positive and productive learning environment for all students.
In Grades 3 and 4, each class is supported by a full-time teacher and a part-time Academic Tutor, allowing for targeted instruction and small group support. At this stage, the curriculum builds on foundational skills while introducing more complex concepts in reading, writing, math, and critical thinking. Students engage in collaborative learning, hands-on activities, and structured discussions that encourage problem-solving and creativity. This balanced approach ensures students develop the academic confidence and social-emotional skills needed to excel as they prepare for upper elementary grades.
Departmentalized Instruction: Starting in the 2023-24 school year, we became departmentalized in 4th grade, enhancing our ability to specialize instruction and provide targeted support. This shift has contributed to significant academic improvements, including an 80% proficiency rate on the Math State Test for the 4th-grade cohort—27% higher than the citywide average for elementary schools.
English Language Arts (ELA): Students engage in 90 minutes of daily instruction, focusing on literacy development through lessons, stations, and hands-on activities. For younger learners in grades K-2, phonics and foundational reading skills are emphasized through targeted programs including Magnetic Reading.
Math: Instruction spans 110 minutes daily in grades K-3, combining lessons, fluency exercise, and interactive stations. For grades 4 and above, students focus on mastering math concepts in 90 minute sessions.
Science: Student explore the world around 45-minute science lessons three times a week, using activity-based learning to encourage curiosity and discovery.
Social Studies: Instruction occurs twice a week and integrates resources that support a humanities-based approach for grades K-4.
Our curriculum incorporates technology to build digital literacy and prepare students for computer-based testing. By blending traditional and modern learning tools, Amber Elementary equips students with the skills they need to succeed academically and thrive in a digital world.
Middle School

Our middle school math teachers receive specialized support from a dedicated coach, ensuring instruction aligns with best practices. This include the introduction of an accelerated algebra program for 8th graders, enabling them to take the Regents exam early.
Science: Instruction fosters inquiry and a deeper understanding of the world. In 5th and 8th grade, students receive 225 minutes of science instruction weekly, while 6th and 7th grades receive 180 minutes weekly. Additionally, 8th grade student take Earth Science, culminating in the Regents exam. This structure ensures students build a strong foundation in scientific principals and critical thinking.
Social Studies: Instruction develops critical thinking and a deep understanding of history and society. In 5th, 6th, and 8th grades, students receive 180 minutes of instruction weekly across four sessions. In 7th grade, instruction increase to 225 minutes weekly with daily sessions, preparing students for advanced study and civic engagement.

English as New Language (ENL)
Amber Charter School provides English as a New Language (ENL) free-standing English as a Second Language [ESL] program. This program provides instruction in English, emphasizing English-language acquisition. However, native language support is available whenever possible. A certified teacher is assigned to provide ESL instruction to ENL students. A Total Physical Response [TPR] approach is used when delivering the instruction. Websites that help build vocabulary, letter sound recognition, and other English language acquisition skills are used for instruction.
In class instruction targets the ENL student through the use of differentiated instruction, and data driven targeted instruction. Some students may be identified to receive Title I Reading intervention from the results of in-house formative assessments. Strategy groups may be used as another opportunity for the teacher to serve the ENL student in the classroom.
Amber Charter Staff address ENL’s comprehension and thinking skills by:
- Using realia (objects, items to represent concepts, e.g.; insects, fish)
- Media, pictures
- Pointing (to support answers)
- Checking points (ongoing questioning, quick checks, etc. …)
- Practicing: repeat, rephrase, clarify, add
- Emphasizing vocabulary (introducing new words, idioms, or abstract concepts)
- Modeling and practicing: Think Aloud, visualizing, writing (responding to prompts, sentence starters, etc.…)
- Utilizing ENL-targeted materials included in curriculum programs.
